Instructions

  • Step 1:
Consider your location. Peacocks are noisy birds, and their cry often sounds like, "help, help!" Be certain your property is properly zoned for raising birds and that neighbors won't rise up against you.
  • Step 2:
Decide if you want to sell peacocks locally, or to a wider customer base. Your options include selling adult peafowl, chicks or peacock eggs. There are exotic animal auctions where you can sell peacocks, but it is difficult to control prices. Carefully consider the need to safely and humanely ship live peacocks.
  • Step 3:
Work up a marketing plan based on your business plan. If you are selling locally, a newspaper ad and word of mouth may be sufficient to get started. For distribution nationally, consider the Internet and working with national peafowl organizations. You may also be able to sell your birds to brokers such as feed store operators who will sell the peacocks direct to customers.
  • Step 4:
Know the types of peacocks. There are hundreds of varieties to sell. All birds are not the same, and new designs and colors are being introduced every year. Special breeding techniques can result in continuing a particularly spectacular genetic line of feather color.
  • Step 5:
Save the feathers. You can sell peacock feathers to be made into jewelry or other ornamentation.
  • Step 6:
Know the advantages and disadvantages of penned peafowl and free-range birds. Predators and traffic can be a problem if the peafowl run free, but free-range birds are also entertaining and may be happier. Peacock cages must be large especially to accommodate a tail (train) in full fan. Also research natural versus artificial hatching to determine option suits your plan to sell peacocks.
  • Step 7:
Make sure your birds have proper medical care. Peacocks are particularly susceptible to foot and leg problems, so make sure you read up on the potential problems and have a qualified vet nearby.

Tips & Warnings

  • Be sure you have a plan to care for your animals even if prices drop. You'll still need to feed and house your peacocks, even if you aren't able to get much money when you sell them.
