Instructions

  • Step 1:
Develop a rapport with your chinchilla. Don't frighten your pet. Chinchillas are timid by nature and easily frightened and stressed out. The more your furry friend trusts you, the quicker you will be able to train him.
  • Step 2:
Take safety precautions. Before shoulder training your chinchilla, set up pillows on the floor around you, and sit on the ground. The last thing you want is for your chinchilla to take a tumble and end up hurt.
  • Step 3:
Place your pet on your shoulders after creating a safe place in which to try out this new skill with your pet chinchilla. He may be frightened and try to run. Stay calm, and make sure your pet stays safe. Yelling or moving fast will frighten your chinchilla even more, which will make training nearly impossible. Be patient.
  • Step 4:
Offer treats as an incentive. With your chinchilla on your shoulder, offer him treats to show him that not only is he safe, but he will also get treats for staying on your shoulder. Do this by placing a favorite treat on your shoulder next to him, so he can eat it at his leisure. Rarely will chinchillas do anything without adequate motivation.
  • Step 5:
Keep at it and eventually your chinchilla will get the hang of it. You'll be able to get him or her to jump on your shoulder on command and maybe even take them for a walk.
