How to Stop Dogs Attacking

Step 1:
Think ahead. Before you embark on your outing, pack a canister of pepper spray, or better yet, a toy cap gun if you know there is a good chance you will be crossing paths with a dog that is prone to attacking. Many dogs can be deterred by the loud noise of a cap gun, but if one attempts to bite you, the pepper spray should be used.
Step 2:
Stop. Never try to outrun a dog that is already showing signs of aggression. Dogs have a natural predatory instinct that can be triggered when a person flees. You don't want to be seen as prey.
Step 3:
Face the dog, but never look directly into its eyes. Keep your mouth closed and if you talk, do so without showing your teeth. Direct eye contact and the sight of teeth are sometimes viewed as challenging actions to a dog.
Step 4:
Shout an initial firm command of "Down" or "No." Dogs are taught to be submissive to humans and a confident tone and command may be all it takes to stop him in his tracks.
Step 5:
Back up slowly. When you are out of the dog's range, you may turn and ride or walk away, but don't do so while he is still close. It may be viewed as a sign you are retreating in fear and could trigger new aggression. Many dogs are territorial and will not follow.
Step 6:
Speak with the owner of a dog that consistently chases you. You have a right to be on the road and the owner is responsible for stopping his dog's attacking behavior. If you get no response contact your local animal control agency.
