Instructions

  • Step 1:
Leave your home and come back. Usually your dog will want to jump because it is excited to see someone, generally you. So step outside of your home and wait a few minutes. Then return just as if you had been away for while; your pet will be just as excited to see you.
  • Step 2:
Allow your dog to jump up on you just as he normally does. Only this time catch his paws with your hands.
  • Step 3:
Keep the dog upright. This is the real trick in training your dog not to jump: holding both of her paws in each hand, keep her upright for several minutes until she becomes uncomfortable. Make sure to appropriately scold her, “Bad dog, no jumping!”
  • Step 4:
Walk around the room with your dog on its hind legs. I recommend this for training dogs that are medium to large sized only. Dogs dislike losing control of their front legs, and will remember that discomfort is associated with jumping up.
  • Step 5:
Repeat the process until you see success. Every time that your dog jumps, it needs to be reminded not to. Simply repeat this process, and over time you will notice that your dog eventually stops jumping.

Tips & Warnings

  • Make sure to hold on firmly to her paws and keep the dog in a standing upright position for at least several minutes. A squirmy dog will be able to break free so hold on tight.
  • Never use extreme physical force to discipline your dog. They are very smart animals but properly training your dog will take time and patience.
