How to Talk to a Bird Breeder

By eHow Pets Editor

Instructions

  • Step 1:
Ask you veterinarian if they know of a local bird breeder that you can talk to. If your veterinarian doesn't know of one then maybe one of their colleagues does. Some veterinarians specialize in birds.
  • Step 2:
Go to the zoo. A zookeeper may be able to direct you to a bird breeder. Many zoos have aviaries where you can view different species of birds. Some birds may not be suitable as a pet, so ask the bird breeder what type of bird would be best for your home and your lifestyle.
  • Step 3:
Peruse specific bird breeder websites such as BirdBreeders.com. You can search for breeders by bird species and by state as well as join in discussion forums and review featured breeders. While on the Internet you can also check with the online yellow pages for a bird breeder that you can call and talk to as well. Ask things like bird temperament, care, special attention the bird may need and any pitfalls associated with certain breeds.
  • Step 4:
Open the phone book. A bird breeder may advertise their services in the phone book. You can call and make an appointment to meet and talk to the breeder. Bird breeders may only breed one specific type of bird so if you have a certain type of bird in mind then you can be picky about who you talk to. Find out if they handle their birds from a very young age to get them socialized so it's easier for you to handle your bird for care and training.
  • Step 5:
Check with your friends. If you have any friends that have birds they may be able to direct you to a bird breeder that you can talk to and have all your questions answered.
