How to Teach Euphemisms

  • Step 1:
    Ask students to list some descriptive words that might be considered harsh or offensive to use.
  • Step 2:
    Ask students how they might rephrase these words if they were trying to talk about someone politely.
  • Step 3:
    Explain that these polite rephrasings are examples of euphemisms.
  • Step 4:
    Have students make a list of harsh phrases or words, then come up with at least two less offensive alternatives to these words.
