Instructions

Things You’ll Need:

  • Tasty dog treats
  • Leash
  • Step 1:
Walk your dog. Your husky will be able to concentrate better during his training session if he is tired from a recent exercise session.
  • Step 2:
Put on her leash. You want to be able to control your dog while you are training her. The easiest way to achieve this is to have her wear her leash during your session.
  • Step 3:
Say his name in an inviting voice. Raise the pitch of your voice slightly and smile when you talk, this automatically gives your voice a cheerful, friendly sound.
  • Step 4:
Give your dog a treat when she looks you in the eye for at least a second. It's also a good idea to "release" your dog from the command before you reward her. This gives you control over making and breaking eye contact.
  • Step 5:
Repeat the training exercise and reward your dog when he responds to his name. You will want to use frequent, short training sessions to reinforce this skill.
  • Step 6:
Reduce the number of treats you give your dog for responding to her name. As she gets to know her name, gradually switch to a schedule of intermittent reinforcement. Give her treats sometimes, but not always.

Tips & Warnings

  • A release command can be as simple as saying, "OK" or "Free," to let him know he is done.
  • Never associate your dog's name with unpleasant things. If you need to discipline your dog, call him to come without using his name. You want his name to have only pleasant associations.
