Instructions

Things You’ll Need:

  • Leash
  • Step 1:
Train your dog to come when still a puppy, if possible. Dog training works best at a young age.
  • Step 2:
Remember to use the word "Come" only in a positive voice. If you use it in a mad tone, the dog associates "Come" with something bad.
  • Step 3:
Start the training with a leash at least six feet long attached to your Labrador's collar. Say your dog's name followed by "Come" in a positive tone, and then give the leash a little tug. Praise the dog as he starts moving toward you, but give another tug if he stops.
  • Step 4:
Reward your dog with food, a toy or praise when she obeys your command. Try to alternate the reward so that your dog doesn't expect food each time.
  • Step 5:
Reinforce lessons through at least daily practice from five to 10 minutes at a time. Once your dog comes with only the word command, take off the leash for practice.
  • Step 6:
Add a favorite toy or a dog treat as an incentive if your Lab seems slow to make the connection.
  • Step 7:
Teach your Labrador to come in different settings and situations, particularly away from home and around other dogs.

Tips & Warnings

  • Find another word to use if your dog associates the word "Come" with punishment. Another word to use is "Here."
  • Never scold your puppy with the word "Come."
  • Do not chase your dog if he gets loose. He'll think it's a game. Instead, call his name and walk in the other direction.
