Instructions

  • Step 1:
Practice voice commands with your small dog in a safe area before taking him out for a walk. Being consistent in how you issue commands will build an association in the dog's mind.
  • Step 2:
Attach a harness that fits snugly but not too tightly against the chest of the small dog. This equipment will provide you with a firm means of physical control.
  • Step 3:
Take your small dog for a walk when you expect to find few distractions. This gives you a chance to instill the heel command without having to worry about the small dog's wavering attention span.
  • Step 4:
Snap the leash and say in a loud voice "heel" if the small dog ignores your command. This corrective movement of the leash is to get the attention of the small dog, not inflict physical punishment.
  • Step 5:
Step in front of your small dog if it continues to ignore your consistent commands. The animal must realize that you're the leader of the pack and must not be allowed to lead you along.
  • Step 6:
Reward the small dog with praise when she listens successfully. Positive reinforcement greatly increases your dog's willingness to obey.
