How to Teach a Child Generosity

Step 1:
Model generous behavior. The best way to teach generosity to a child is by showing them how to treat others in simple ways they understand. Share your dessert with others; give your friend a book once you've finished it.
Step 2:
Correct your child when he displays selfish behavior with positive reinforcement rather than harsh punishment. If he won't share with his brother, explain to him that he wouldn't want to be in his shoes and suggest better ways to handle the situation.
Step 3:
Praise your child when she is generous with others. Tell her how proud you are of her and why.
Step 4:
Let your child learn to work out generosity with his friends without too much interference on your part. Socialization is about kids learning how to work issues out on their own.
Step 5:
Teach her that she can't always have what she wants. Discourage a sense of entitlement, and your child won't feel that she deserves to have everything for herself.
Step 6:
Donate to the needy. Get your child to help you pick out old toys, clothes and food in the pantry to donate to people who need them more than you. Explain why and make it a fun experience.
Step 7:
Volunteer in the community. Bring your child along to expose him to the needs of others. This is the best way to teach your child to be a future volunteer.
