How to Teach a Dog to Greet Other Dogs

Step 1:
Practice basic obedience with your dog before greeting the other dog. Make sure your dog is calm and you have complete control over the situation. It is best to have both dogs on short leash when they greet each other, especially for their first meeting.
Step 2:
Get your dog's attention before approaching the other dog. Stop walking and say the dog's name. After she looks at you, tell her to sit or wait, whichever command works best for your dog. Reward her with a treat or praise when she is focused on you.
Step 3:
Walk towards the other dog and stop. Again instruct your dog to sit or wait. Tell him to stay and reward him for the behavior.
Step 4:
Keep the dogs apart while they are on leash. Dogs need to be able to use body language when communicating with each other. Allowing another dog to touch your dog while she is on leash is not fair and could lead to a fight. If you want to allow the dogs to interact with each other you will need to remove the leashes.
Step 5:
Bring the dog's attention and focus back on you when you are ready to leave the other dog. Say the dogs name again and give her a verbal command that tells her it's time to go, such as "Let's go." Practice basic obedience and lead your dog away from the other dog.
