Instructions

  • Step 1:
Avoid negative input. When dogs are young, they respond to getting their noses rubbed in excrement or their rear swatted with a newspaper. As they grow older this is not as effective a tool for teaching.
  • Step 2:
Use positive reinforcement. No matter how old a dog is, they enjoy receiving treats and love. Every time you interact with your dog you are training them in one way or another. Make sure that when you teach an old dog a new trick you reward that intended behavior every time.
  • Step 3:
Be patient. Old dogs will not pick things up right away. It takes time to teach an old dog a new behavior or action. Continue to use consistent positive input and give your dog plenty of time to learn the lesson.
  • Step 4:
Build the desired behavior one step at a time. You cannot teach an old dog a new trick of that trick is too complex. Make sure your dog can master the first step before introducing another step.
  • Step 5:
Go to a professional. If you are not getting the results you desire when trying to teach an old dog a new trick, take your dog to a professional dog trainer. If your dog is in a class with other dogs, she may pick up the new skill more quickly when surrounded by other dogs performing the same action.
