How to Train Hunting Dogs to Use Decoys

Step 1:
Start training a puppy early. That's when he's most likely to pick up things quickly. Make sure your puppy knows his basic commands like sit, stay and fetch.
Step 2:
Show your dog what a decoy looks like. Hold it up to his nose and let him mouth it. Then, show him what waterfowl smells like. It's important he understand the difference between the two.
Step 3:
Attach a scent to the decoy and throw it. Tell your dog to retrieve it. Make sure when he brings it back, you reward him enthusiastically. Repeat this exercise.
Step 4:
Start out by throwing the decoy close by, gradually extending the distance. Keep it simple so you keep your dog's attention.
Step 5:
Practice as often as possible, preferably everyday. It should be a fun experience for your dog. Award his successes and good behavior with treats.
Step 6:
Simulate real hunting situations. If you want him to perform around guns, you need to train him around guns. You can't expect him to handle a situation if it's completely unknown to him. Take him with you when you go to target practice.
Step 7:
Get your dog in top shape before hunting. Condition him so he performs to the best of his capability.

Use treats while training your dog. This will reinforce their successes.
Buy a training video. There are several on the market, created by training professionals.
Keep your dog hydrated during training and hunting.
Don't get frustrated with your dog. This will only slow his progress.
Don't practice too long. Even though it's important to practice fetching decoys as much as possible, you want to keep each session positive. Once your dog seems to lose interest, quit for the day.
