Instructions

  • Step 1:
Set your puppy up for success. If you have items that you don't want the puppy to chew on, pick them up and get them out of the area that the puppy will be in.
  • Step 2:
Supervise your puppy and keep him in a safe area like a crate or room when you are not there. Letting your new puppy have the run of the house can be a recipe for disaster. By supervising your puppy, you'll distract her when she begins to chew on something rather than coming home to find it already ruined.
  • Step 3:
Distract your puppy when you find her chewing on an inappropriate item and then give her an appropriate one, like a chew toy. A loud noise can often be enough to get your puppy to stop chewing for a minute.
  • Step 4:
Use chew deterrents on items that you don't want the puppy to chew on. The spray gives the item a bitter taste and makes the puppy less likely to want to chew on it.
  • Step 5:
Give your puppy plenty of appropriate toys to play with. Young puppies often chew when they are teething so provide them with toys designed to help relieve the discomfort. You'll need to keep an eye on any toys, though, to make sure that your puppy can't swallow squeakers or other parts. Rotate the toys to keep your puppy interested in them.
  • Step 6:
Exercise your puppy. Games, walks and training are great ways of tiring your puppy out. While you don't want to overdo it, a tired puppy that's had plenty of stimulation and exercise is less likely to chew the house apart.
