How to Train a Puppy Not to Dig

Step 1:
Fill the holes that your puppy has dug. If you constantly fill their holes, sometimes puppies lose interest in digging when they realize their digging is futile. Fill the holes with anything that is handy, including dirt or dried leaves. Once your puppy sees that his holes are being filled, it should lessen his desire to dig.
Step 2:
Provide your puppy with plenty of alternatives to digging. Most puppies dig out of boredom when there is nothing else to keep their attention. Playing with your puppy or giving your puppy play toys is a good way to stop her from digging. The more alternatives to digging you give your puppy, the less likely she will be to dig.
Step 3:
Place chili pepper in the areas where your puppy tends to dig. Chili pepper is a natural dog deterrent, and your puppy will soon realize that those areas are off limits. You can even bury the chili pepper so that it isn't visible until the puppy starts digging.
Step 4:
Allow a specific area for your puppy to dig. If your puppy absolutely loves digging, a compromise could be made where you allow your puppy to dig but only in one certain area. This area should be away from all fences and should be in a place that is safe for both you and your puppy. You can opt to by sand and create a large sand box to making digging easier and safer for your puppy.
