Instructions

Things You’ll Need:

  • Rat treats
  • Step 1:
Hold a treat above your rat's head and say "clap."
  • Step 2:
Say "clap" again to train him and as he begins to reach up for the treat move the treat slightly out of his reach so that his paws will come together when he misses it.
  • Step 3:
Repeat this three times then give him the treat to train him and reinforce the command.
  • Step 4:
Follow through with these steps frequently as needed to train him until he begins to recognize and follow the "clap" command when given.
  • Step 5:
Practice this trick several times a week after you have trained your rat to clap on command. Your rat will likely forget his trick if you aren't consistent.

Tips & Warnings

  • If your pet rat doesn't seem interested in the activity that you are presenting, simply wait and try it again later.
  • When you're trying to train your rat to clap, never punish him for doing something wrong. Reward him when he does something right and you will get better results.
  • Highly desirable treats are important to keep your rat motivated. Dried fruit, sunflower seeds, dried pasta, and cereal are good treats to try.
  • Never push your pet rat when training on command. You don't want your rat or you to become frustrated.
