Instructions

  • Step 1:
Train your setter in basic obedience. These include sit, stay, heel and come. Include hand signals with these commands so that you don't have to yell to your dog when you're on a hunt.
  • Step 2:
Introduce your setter to the birds in a controlled area. While introducing the birds, reinforce the commands so that your dog listens at home and while on the hunt.
  • Step 3:
Allow the setter's natural hunting ability to come in to play when the birds are introduced. The setter will begin pointing naturally without you having to train her.
  • Step 4:
Present gunfire while out in the field. Your setter may be startled at first but will eventually become accustomed to the noise.
  • Step 5:
Take your setter out on a practice hunt. Reinforce the commands from the previous lessons while out on the hunt. Keep practicing the hunt until your setter begins to recognize the dead birds and becomes interested in retrieving them.
  • Step 6:
Return to field training if your setter fails to listen to your commands during the hunt. This may mean he isn't ready yet or is easily excitable.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you lack the time or patience to train your setter, seek professional help.
  • It's best to begin training your setter as a puppy. This will ensure complete loyalty.
