How to Treat Your Pets

By eHow Pets Editor

Instructions

Things You’ll Need:

  • Leash
  • Collar
  • Treats
  • Food
  • Water
  • Step 1:
Reward the behaviors you wish to reinforce in your pets. For example, if the dog sits immediately when commanded, give him a treat. Always have a few treats on hand when training your dog so you can spontaneously reward him.
  • Step 2:
Ignore the bad behaviors you want to train away. This sounds counterintuitive since it would make sense to discipline or correct the dog when he misbehaves. A dog may misbehave to get attention, and if you give it to him, you're reinforcing a bad habit. Wait until the dog behaves the way you want before acknowledging him.
  • Step 3:
Teach your dog tricks. Even something simple like teaching your dog to roll over is a great way to provide him with positive reinforcement. Some dog breeds are also working dogs, meaning they need a job to feel fulfilled. Every time your dog perform a trick, give her a treat.
  • Step 4:
Make sure your pets always have water available. The same could be said about food, unless you're trying to control your pet's weight. The only time water shouldn't be available to your pets is after you've walked them for the last time of the day.
  • Step 5:
Give your pets plenty of exercise. Play with them at the park, run around the house with them, or just get them active. This burns a lot of energy and keeps them happy.

Tips & Warnings

  • Get training from a professional dog trainer. With the help of a professional you can teach your dog how to respond to specific commands, but you can also learn effective ways of dealing with behaviors that you do or do not like.
  • Never hit your dog. Corporal punishment can inflict injury, instill fear of yourself and others and teaches your pet to be aggressive.
