Instructions

  • Step 1:
Choose the type of filter you prefer. There are numerous choices available. Spend some time researching the different varieties. Evaluate not only initial cost, but also maintenance costs for replacement heads, carbon filters, filter wool and other items that require continuous changing. Think carefully about the effort involved with the upkeep of each type of unit. The upkeep and maintenance work varies.
  • Step 2:
Consider a dual filtration system. An under-gravel system, combined with an outside power filter that hangs off the back of the tank, is a common choice for a dual system. Utilizing dual systems keeps the tank cleaner. Less algae equates to fewer sidewall wipe-downs and partial water changes. However, running 2 systems increases maintenance costs and electrical usage. You must weigh all options.
  • Step 3:
Purchase the proper size system(s) for your tank. Go to a quality aquarium shop and tell the clerk what size (in gallons) and shape of aquarium you own. If you do not know the gallon size, measure your aquarium and take the measurements to the store with you. Tell the clerk what type of fish you intend to own. Large goldfish, for example, require more powerful filtration than a tank full of angelfish. The clerk can help you select the appropriate size system(s) and answer any questions you may have.
  • Step 4:
Install your new filtration unit(s). Read the directions carefully. Install water pumps properly to prevent accidental damage.
  • Step 5:
Maintain your equipment. Follow the manufacturer's guidelines for cleaning your new filter. Replace disposable pieces according to the directions. Some filtration units must be broken down in a specific order. Forcing jammed pieces or skipping steps can damage the unit.

Tips & Warnings

  • Never plug in a dry water pump. The motor can burn out!
  • Never use chemicals to clean a water filter! They can leach into the tank and kill your fish!
