How to Use a Duck Call

By eHow Arts & Entertainment Editor

Instructions

  • Step 1:
Hold the duck call in between your forefinger and thumb, with the mouthpiece placed firmly against your lips.
  • Step 2:
Blow through the mouthpiece of the duck call in short bursts to mimic the quacking sound of ducks.
  • Step 3:
Produce a hail call by blowing into the mouthpiece of the duck call while holding the blow for longer durations. Hail calls are most commonly used to lure ducks in that are farther away.
  • Step 4:
Use a feed call when ducks are flying nearby or directly overhead. This type of call is produced when extremely short, quick bursts of air are blown though the duck call. Ducks associate this call with other ducks that are feeding down on the ground below.

Tips & Warnings

  • Familiarize yourself with the duck call by watching a video or DVD of hunters using the duck call while out in the wild. You will be able to hear the various calls used in each situation.
  • Bring a buddy to duck call with you. The ducks will think that there are multiple ducks in the area and be more inclined to approach if they feel safe.
