How to Use a Leash to Walk Your Dog

Step 1:
Buy a collar and a leash at the local pet store. It is best to buy a leather leash because they are less likely to break. A face collar works best for dogs who tend to pull on the leash.
Step 2:
Put the collar on the dog. A face collar should be placed over the muzzle first, and then attached behind the neck. A neck collar simply goes around the dog's neck.
Step 3:
Tighten the collar to fit the dog snugly. If the collar is not tightened enough, the dog may be able to wiggle out of it.
Step 4:
Attach the leash to the collar. There is usually a small loop somewhere on the collar where the leash is attached. A leash should be a minimum of six feet long. This will assure the dog has enough leash to walk ahead or move to the side if desired.
Step 5:
Guide the dog as you walk with the leash. You can pull or tug on it lightly to get the dog's attention to stop or turn.

Tips & Warnings

It is a good idea to walk your dog 3 to 5 times per week.
Never pull too hard on the leash because you could choke the dog or make him angry.
