Instructions

  • Step 1:
Purchase a sturdy 6-foot leash and collar. These items help you maintain control of the walk, yet allow your dog enough freedom to visit the world a bit.
  • Step 2:
Speak a 1- or 2-word phrase, such as "Let's walk," and start walking at a normal pace. If your dog starts pulling on the leash, stop walking and wait for her to look back at you.
  • Step 3:
Start walking forward again once you have the dog's attention. Stop again any time he starts pulling and causes the leash to tighten. Praise him when he stops and gives you attention with a 1- or 2-word phrase, such as "Good dog."
  • Step 4:
Continue to walk and stop, walk and stop, going a little further each time. Praise your dog each time she gives a correct response.

Tips & Warnings

  • Walking your dog correctly involves more than a good leash. Be sure the environment is healthy and safe for you and your dog before setting out on a walk. Check the pads of your dog's paws for thorns, don't walk during the hottest part of the day and be sure you have a way to defend both of you from any stray, aggressive dogs you may encounter.
