Step 1:
Train your dog properly from the time he's a puppy. Appropriate training is important because it not only establishes you as the boss, but it can also save your dog's life. Think about a dog that somehow gets off his leash next to a busy road. A well-trained dog will come running when his owner calls him. If the dog isn't trained well, the results could be disastrous.
Step 2:
Reward your dog for good behavior. His goal is to please you. If he does something wrong, it's most likely because he doesn't understand what you want him to do.
Step 3:
Figure out what your dog loves and find a way to let him do it. Many terriers love to dig, but homeowners don't want their lawns torn up. Section off a small part of your lawn and let your dog dig in that area only. Some hunting dogs have been bred to track; incorporate this into your play by hiding a bone or some toys for him to find.
Step 4:
Always treat your dog with respect, give him plenty of affection and provide him with necessities, such as fresh water, food and vet care. Never mistreat or neglect him.
Step 5:
Include your dog in family activities as much as possible. Dogs are pack animals and they instinctively want to accompany you. Schedule activities that you can do with your dog. Make time to play with your pet every day.
