How to be friend and master of your dog

  • Step 1:
Be aware that dogs are pack animals, and as such either expect to be dominant or fight for it. Your dog should think of you as its 'alpha' (top) dog, even though it may be alpha to its pack (or doggie friends/roommates). Alpha behavior is seen when the dog wants something a human or another dog doesn't want it to have, be it food or a valued place on the couch. Growling is observed, then barking, then attack.
  • Step 2:
If you see aggressive alpha behavior, stop it immediately and without fear. Your dog will not love or respect you if you fear him/her. Stop aggressive behavior by grabbing the dog on side of the neck and 'growling' back to him/her. If a fight breaks out between dogs, grab the top of the neck. And when you yell at them, do is with assertiveness.
  • Step 3:
Continue the above whenever or wherever you have to. Be kind to the dog when it is good, or just being a dog. If a dog is abused, it can become a 'fear biter'.
  • Step 4:
Be aware that some dogs have behavior problems that are based in organic causes. Defective brain curciuts due to disease or infections agents (e.g., rabies) can cause problems. Certain breeds can be more prone to attack mode, such as Pit Bulls and (in later life) Dalmations. But actually far more problems are caused by defective owners than defective biology in dogs.

Tips & Warnings

  • Compassion and consistency are most valued by animals
  • Be aware that some dogs are aggressive when certain things are done to them that they MUST be conditioned to (such as cutting nails).
  • Do not be afraid to use a muzzle when you have to.
  • Massage is a good thing to do.Massage the trunk when dog is being 'good', and also the top of head (which is an acupuncture point).
  • Abused animals can become fear-biters
