How to talk to a horse

  • Step 1:
    Keep your voice even and steady. Animals can sense fear and uncertainty. Horses can pick up on many things from the tone of your voice and the body language you are giving.
  • Step 2:
    Talk soothingly to your horse if he is in a stressful situation, such as having his hooves trimmed or getting shots at the veterinarian's office.
  • Step 3:
    Raise your voice and keep it firm when scolding or correcting your horse. Horses can sense the changes in your voice from friendly to stern.
  • Step 4:
    Remain friendly and calm when praising your horse. A sweet sounding voice can be a reward for a positive behavior to horses.
  • Step 5:
    Talking combined with other praise or punishment can make a difference in how your horse reacts to you.
