Things You’ll Need:

• Puppy training pads
•
Time
•
Patience
• Step 1:
If possible, start training your dog to go outside when he is around eight weeks old. If he is too young, he won't be physically ready. If he is older than that he may have already established his routine. But don't panic if you are trying to train an older dog. He can still learn, it might just take longer.
• Step 2:
First thing in the morning when your dog wakes up, carry him directly outside. It can be tempting to let him walk, but he might not make it outside if you do. Wait until he seems to be getting the idea that outside is the place to go!
• Step 3:
As soon as you take your dog outside and set him down where you want him to go, say the phrase that you will want to use with him, such as "Go potty!" or "Do your business!" When he goes, praise him to reinforce the phrase. For example, say "Good, go potty!"
• Step 4:
Take your dog outside within fifteen minutes of eating or drinking. Use your key phrase periodically, but don't rush him. It's also important that you don't play with him during this time as he may misunderstand why you are outside.
• Step 5:
Keep "pee pads" near the door you want your dog to go to when he needs to go outside. These pads are treated with a scent that attracts your dog to do his business there. This will train him to head towards the door when he needs to go, giving you a "heads up".

Tips & Warnings

• If you see your dog about to go while inside the house, quickly grab him and take him outside.
• Don't yell at or punish your dog if he has an accident in the house.
