How to train or help a puppy stop crying when locked up or outside

By Ryn Gargulinski

Instructions

Things You’ll Need:

  • Step 1:
Get your puppy used to the area. Start by locking him up or putting him outside, and stay with him to show him how much fun it is to be there.
  • Step 2:
When it’s time for your puppy to be on his own, start small with 5-minute intervals. Increase to 10 or 20 minutes, and keep going until he is cool, calm and occupied for long stretches of time.
  • Step 3:
Hide treats in the area. Before you even put your puppy in her crate or outside, hide a number of small dog biscuits around so she finds the area full of pleasant surprises.
  • Step 4:
Give him something to play with. Place a number of toys in the crate or yard so he can occupy his time chewing or playing and not whining.
  • Step 5:
Be firm. No matter how cute she looks or annoying she may sound, do not give in to her crying.

Tips & Warnings

  • Practice by pretending to leave, going so far as to drive your car down the block, and come back on foot to spy on your puppy to see how he’s doing.
  • Make sure the area where your puppy is staying has a fresh water supply and plenty of blankets, shade and somewhere to lie down cozily.
  • Don't give in, or she'll never learn.
