How to visit Bear Country, USA

By Angela DeFini

Instructions

  • Step 1:
Obtain an enclosed vehicle. Whether you’re driving a car, SUV, min-van or RV, you’ll be able to appreciate the wildlife. Motorcycles, bicycles and convertibles (with no top or soft-tops) are not allowed.
  • Step 2:
Determine the easiest way to get there. Located on the road to Mount Rushmore, it can be easily accessed on the way to or from the monument as well as from various lodging facilities in the surrounding area.
  • Step 3:
Make sure you have your camera handy. This three mile drive puts you face-to-face with grizzly bears, elk, reindeer, wolf, sheep, mountain lion and buffalo. These animals are not in contained exhibits; they roam free throughout the park and could cross in front of or walk alongside your vehicle at any time.
  • Step 4:
Visit the Wildlife Center once you’ve completed your drive. Visitors are able to get out of their cars and walk around to view black bear cubs and young wolf pups, as well as otters, foxes, badger and skunks.
  • Step 5:
Be sure to visit the gift shop before you leave Bear Country. Offering a wide variety of apparel, jewelry, art and carvings, home décor, collectibles and souvenirs, you’re sure to find something to commemorate your up-close look at South Dakota’s wildlife.
