Instructions

  • Step 1:
Choose a favorite treat or toy you know your dachshund likes. Use a change in tone or pitch to call her. If she looks at you briefly and then is back to her distraction, ignore it and begin again.
  • Step 2:
Reserve giving the treat until she has acknowledged you and not the just the treat. Snap your fingers near your head to bring her eye level up or hold the treat closer to your face. When she looks into your eyes immediately praise and give her the treat.
  • Step 3:
Practice getting her attention off lead. For safety, teach her to come to you when called. Train this gradually in a safe place like the backyard and then in a leash-free dog park. This being said, dachshunds are more likely to chase a scent than many breeds regardless of the promise of a treat.
  • Step 4:
Train the dachshund to control herself against distractions. Place the dog in the down and stay position. Place a treat on the floor a couple feet in front of her. Choose a release command when she can take the treat. Gradually, move the treat closer in your sessions and finally walk out of the room when the dachshund has mastered waiting on your release command.
