Geography

  • Step 1:
These two distinct dog breeds originated in different parts of Europe. The Manchester terrier was developed in England. The miniature pinscher is a German dog breed.

Origins

  • Step 1:
The Manchester terrier is descended from the Black and Tan terrier, which is the oldest terrier breed. In contrast, the miniature pinscher was developed from the short-haired German pinscher, the dachshund and the Italian greyhound.

Size

  • Step 1:
The miniature pinscher should weigh between 8 and 10 pounds, and stand 10 to 12-1/2 inches at the shoulder. The Manchester terrier is available in two sizes, a toy version, which weighs up to 12 pounds, and a standard, which weighs from 12 to 22 pounds. The toy Manchester terrier is 10 to 12 inches high; the standard stands 15 to 16 inches at the shoulder.

Appearance

  • Step 1:
Manchester terriers only have coats with black and tan markings. Miniature pinschers have coats that come in red, red with black, black with rust or chocolate with tan.

Behavior

  • Step 1:
The main difference in the behavior is that a miniature pinscher is a high energy dog that is highly excitable, while a Manchester terrier is a calmer, less "barky" dog. The Manchester terrier is an eager learner, and bonds strongly with its owner. Miniature pinschers have a more dominant personality and need strong leadership and firm handling.
