Why Doesn't My Dog Drink Water Anymore?

Instructions

  • Step 1:
Is your dog drinking enough water?

What is Normal?

  • Step 1:
The amount of water your dog drinks will vary according to activity, environment and diet. Allow your dog free access to fresh, clean water at all times.

Identification

  • Step 1:
Pinch the skin between your dog's shoulder blades. It should spring back immediately. The slower the rate of recoil, the more dehydrated the dog.

Causes

  • Step 1:
Viral diseases like leptospirosis, parvo, distempter and rabies can cause low water consumption. Mouth injuries and dental disease can impede drinking as well. Some dogs stop drinking water when they are stressed or away from home.

Prevention

  • Step 1:
Every day, empty, wash and refill your dog's water bowl with the same amount of water. Note any change in water consumption.

Solution

  • Step 1:
Increase your dog's fluid intake by feeding higher-moisture canned food. Add water to the food for an extra dose of fluid. Offer unsalted broth to encourage drinking.

Warning

  • Step 1:
Dog dehydration can be fatal. Contact your veterinarian if you notice any sudden, drastic change in your dog's water intake.
