Instructions

Dietary Indiscretion

  • Step 1:
When your dog eats something that is inappropriate---like an item of clothing or part of a tennis ball, for example---vomiting can harmlessly dislodge it. Eating too rapidly is another cause of vomiting. Usually your pet vomits once and feels better.

Food Allergy

  • Step 1:
While not common, food allergies can result in vomiting. They are usually accompanied by itching as well. To diagnose, you should eliminate most common causes of allergies including beef, chicken, dairy, soy, corn and eggs from your dog's diet. If the vomiting stops, your pet may have a food allergy.

Parasites

  • Step 1:
Parasites like roundworm, whipworm or hookworm can cause vomiting. If you suspect this is making your dog sick, you should see your vet for diagnosis and treatment.

Inflammatory Bowel Disease

  • Step 1:
Like humans, dogs can have inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). It is characterized by both vomiting and diarrhea. If it is severe, your pet may become listless and lose weight. Your vet can prescribe medication and suggest diet changes that may help.

Abdominal Disorders

  • Step 1:
Abdominal disorders like pancreatitis, an infected uterus or even cancer of the gastrointestinal tract may also cause a dog to vomit. If you suspect any of these conditions, take your dog to the vet immediately.
