The Chihuahua Born Without Eyes

Sampson1.jpg picture by kateholl

“When you sneeze, I jump…and I have eyeballs!”  My 11 year old daughter pointed out to me as we were discussing Samson’s reactions to loud sounds.

I met Samson on a beautiful fall morning; he was only 4 weeks old.  His breeder was devastated at the fact this sweet little puppy had been born without eyes.  The moment she introduced me to Samson I fell in love.  My breeder friend told me she would do everything she could to give this puppy a chance for life and I assumed anyone in her position would feel the same way.  Sadly, since I brought Samson into my home, I’ve been shocked to learn many believe a dog born with disabilities should be put to sleep.  After meeting Samson, I went home and ponder the possibility of become the owner of a blind dog.  Did I have the commitment needed?  Did I have the knowledge? Did I have the right conditions in my home?  Most importantly, did I have the love in my heart to raise this puppy?  The more I read about blind dogs, the more I was encouraged by their stories; and I knew in my heart this little blind puppy would add to the quality of my life if I would commit my love and care to him.  I made up my mind to bring Samson home and to post a blog sharing his journey with all his struggles, victories and adventures.

Samson has not disappointed me!  In the short time he has been living in our home, he has proven to me over and over again of his great heart, intelligence and willingness to live – and not just live, but live life to the fullest.  I had so many questions about our puppy the moment we met him.  Some questions have been answered and others will only be answered with time.  I’m training Samson to trust and Samson is training me to understand blind puppies.  We now know to use the words, “Its o.k. Samson!” when our puppy jumps at an unexpected sound.  He waits for our reassurance and our arms around him, and little by little as time passes by, Samson is recognizing sounds.

I want to build a community for people raising blind puppies.  Samson’s blog tells his story in hopes to encourage and inspire others.
We want to spread the word,
“Blind Dogs See With Their Heart and Are Worth Loving”.

That is a great story. I'd love to hear updates about Samson. Was it difficult to teach him where the furniture was in your house? Please keep us updated on him...this is a "feel good" kind of story!

My mom has a Boston Terrier that went blind when he was around 2. He is now around 10 years old or so. He has had no problems and lives a very full fun life. She never even considered having him put down! She just knows not to move the furniture around! What a wonderful wonderful life you have given Samson, bless you and your family.......

Samson is very lucky to have a family pulling for him!!! I adopted a 6 wk old Great Dane born with eyes, but no vision. Later, we had to have his eyeballs removed and prothetics added keep him from having a caved in look. But, I too learned a lot through trial and error. There wasn't much info out there. Dagwood had to learn from his furbrothers. Thank you for you care of Samson and your promotion of the wonders of dogs with disabilities!

awww that's so sad I'm just so happy he was able to stay alive I've never thought that dog could be born with out eyes, But I guess we all know different things! Question you know how blind people have dogs to guide them do you or (you guys) have to guide him and make sure he doesn't run into walls or does he just manage on his own!?!?!
Mar 4, 2009 puppyluver8

Thank you for taking a chance on Samson. My Leia was from an oppps litter and was going to be drown because she was born without one of her eyes. I was so grateful that I knew a friend of the person. Even though she has one eye she has very limited sight. And we learned things by trial and error. She is now a year old. When people come into our home they never suspect that she cant see. I will admit that she is very spoiled and I wouldnt have her any other way.

Thank you for giving him a chance. All dogs deserve a chance no matter what may or may not be wrong with them. God bless you and may you have many, many years of happiness.

i too had a blind pup in a litter of dobies and my vet said put him down. nope. baily is doing wonderful in his forever home. baily is now 8 yrs. old. the cool things i witnessed watched as this pup learned to "navigate" his world. what a gift to be lost had i "put him down".
Mar 14, 2009 bethieboo202
was samson's mother not aprovd with him like she refused to breed him because that is what happened to my dog henry but he as the runt, his mom magic is a boat dog, he stopped breathing so he had to be bottel fed back to life. *Snifel*

I would like to say that many puppies and dogs need more caring people like you who are willing to put in the efforts to raise a puppy like Samson. It takes a dog lover with a great big heart to do such a caring thing and we all know its worth it...I know as I am also an animal lover.

Thank you for bringing him into your home and hearts. I recently visited shredder looking to buy a new puppy. There I found a shitzu facing the same hardship. Fortunately I walked into her life at the right time. One week later she would have been put to sleep. I'm an avid animal lover and it did not take me long to speak up on this little girls behalf. On February 19 me and my family will be bringing home our new girlie girl. I am one excited expectant mother-to-be!! Do you have any tips and helpful information can use?

My son was driving 18 wheeler 5 days ago, 2nd car in front of him threw something out of passenger window - about 100 yards away, then saw puppy come out of bushes onto the road going around in circles. He stopped, picked him up and drove to job site. ...He brought the pup home after work. He's definitely Great Pyrenees, about 6-8 weeks old with undeveloped eyes. We fed and watered him and he's doing great and is such a cuddly, joyful puppy. I believe we've already found a perfect home for this special needs sweetheart. One of the cars coming the other way turned around to follow monsters who threw him out. Hopefully they got the tag number and reported them. Thanks for posting your story about Samson - such a heartwarming and encouraging story and THANKS to my son for having such a heart of gold and rescuing "Kenny" (short for Kenworth, the 18-wheeler where he spent the first 6 hours of his post-rescue live.)
Dec 7, 2011 Chish Chihuahua's
Hi, My little smooth coat Chihuahua Poppy had her puppies 3 weeks ago,She had 4 beautiful little boys, and one of them looks just like Samson. His eye's have not yet opened and his eye socket looks and feels empty, I know when I go to my vet to have him wormed he will tell me it would be better for him if I had him put to sleep but I will never let that happen. Your story has give me hope for him and our future together. If you have any advice for me it would most welcome. Thank you so much.
