All in the Family

Chihuahua / Shih Tzu
August 1, 2009

In mid April, 2008 Nick and I received a call from my mom. She began telling me a story about how my dad came home with a tiny "purse dog" who was too cute for words. I was instantly intrigued - I had always wanted a small dog. Initially, we thought my dad would be keeping the dog. My parents sent us photos of the tiny pup. We had never seen such a cutie. She was tiny. I quickly made plans to come over to my parents house the following evening for dinner and to meet the puppy. I was just going to "look." The next day I arrived at their house. I walked through the front door and immediately saw her in front of me - on the other side of a baby gate. Words cannot describe how tiny she was. I had never seen such a small dog. She was the cutest little thing I had ever seen. Judging from her size, I expected her to be shy and timid. Boy was I wrong. She was assertive and brave. She knew what she wanted and she wanted to play. I fell in love immediately. That night at dinner we all discussed the fate of this darling pup. My parents wanted her, but didn't want to go through raising another puppy. They already had their four year old Shih-Tzu Abby. My brother and sister-in-law also wanted her, but they were living with my parents at the time and didn't know where they would be living in the year to come. That left me. I wanted her desperately. I knew Nick would fall in love with her as soon as he saw her, but I also knew that he didn't want a dog right now. The idea, however, of none of us taking her was too much. Wherever she ended up, she needed to stay in the family. I took a risk and took her home with me for a "weekend trial." Poor Nick. Two seconds after seeing her he was a gonner. She was cute, small, loving and calm (at least initially). In addition, she was not shy. She was sure of herself, brave and held her own with our 1 year old cat. That weekend we showed her off to all our friends, bonded with her, and fell in love with her. By the end of the weekend, we named her. . . Bailey.

Wow! I don't think Bailey could be any cuter. What a sweetheart. She's totally irresistable, no wonder she won your heart. Give her a big birthday hug and cuddles from me. I hope you have many more years with this precious girl.
