Buddy, our Golden Retriever, came into our lives almost five years ago. We had lost our Kokee only a year before and our hearts still ached over the loss. But still, we felt that there was still room for another dog in our lives. Buddy was estimated to be about four years old when we adopted him from a local animal rescue. There was so much about Buddy that was unknown. Buddy had to be the saddest and most pitiful looking thing, so scrawny and thin. We were told that he had most likely been abused and it was clear from his ragged appearance that he had not been looked after. We were told that Buddy had been in three different homes. For whatever reason, things had not worked out for Buddy. When we brought him home we had Buddy in to see our vet the very next day. She told us that if Buddy had not come in when he did, he may not have lived, because he was so malnourished. Buddy was pretty hyper and he barked a lot. He was not socialized around other dogs and Buddy would get so upset that he would get sick to his stomach. He was impossible to walk on a leash. An animal trainer we took him to see told us that we were wasting our time and described him as aggressive. Something inside us did not want to believe that we were wasting our time. There was however a point when we wondered what we had gotten ourselves into. And yet, there was a vulnerable side to Buddy and our hearts could not help but melt when those big brown eyes of his looked into ours. He so desperately needed a place that he could call home with a family that would love him. Fast forward a year later. Buddy had put on some weight and looked really good. The barking had stopped, he was no longer hyper and he loved playing in the park with other dogs. With time and patience, he grew into an affectionate and handsome dog and is a much loved member of our family. One time, when I had Buddy out for his daily run in the local park and was sharing Buddy’s story with another dog owner, they said something very profound to me that I will never forget. "All your dog wants from you is to be the person that they need you to be." I have never forgotten those words. I really do believe, and Buddy is a living testament to this, that with a little TLC, miracles can happen.
