All in the Family

Pomeranian / Terrier

First of all, he was born in 1985, not 1990. If you want to read a long story, the story on how he died, then go ahead. Be warned, it's long. We were on our way to Lake George, NY for vacation, just like every year. And just like every year, our animal-loving neighbor, Susan, was watching our dog, Dewy. At the time of this story, he was nineteen and a half years old. In the middle of our fun week, I got a feeling. A feeling that our beloved Dewy was hurt. I ignored the feeling. The next day, it was bugging me again so I asked my father. "Daddy, what if Dewy gets hurt?" "He's fine! Enjoy your self, we're on vacation! This isn't the time to worry!" I knew he was right, so again, I ignored the feeling and went back to picking something from the souvenir shop. Finally, Saturday came. The day were we went back to Canada, and the day we would all remember for the rest of our lives. As we were driving into the garage, something caught the corner of my eye. It was a poster taped to the streetlight next to the garage. I saw the title and immediately yelled. "Daddy!" I pointed to the poster. "Look!" "Half deaf? Half blind? White stripe from the back of the head? Mostly beige colored? Old? Goes by the name of....DEWY!?" He ran out of the car as my brother, mother and I cried. He was, in fact, a present for my mother from my father 5 years before they got married. He was 3 months old when my father got him. Getting back to the story, my neighbor told us that she was outside reading with Dewy when the phone rang. She went back inside to pick it up and when she came back out, our beloved Dewy was missing. She said she searched everywhere, but no luck. My father went to the SPCA 9 times that day, but they didn't find a dog with Dewy's description. The next day, the SPCA called saying they think they found our Dewy. It was true! They found him! We quickly gave him a bath and then immediately drove him to the vet. Bad news, he had a broken back and his hips were out of place. We was to be put to sleep the following day. I still remember seeing his miserable eyes as we tried to feed him, give him strength and try to walk him. I was the one that my parents told to talk to him. I still remember the last words I said to him before he left to be put to sleep. "I love you, and I always will. I've only known you for 9 years, but in heaven, when I die, I'll visit you every single day and we can talk about your favorite things...I promise." I was only nine years old at the I am 14 and up to this day, my whole family still misses him. R.I.P Dewy, 1985-2004
