Jack Pack

Belgian Malinois / Labrador Retriever

I got Jack Pack from the animal shelter in Tucson. AZ. He was the cutest puppy with his big ears and playful nature. When Jack was eight months old he ran out of the front door and got hit by a car. Fearing he was dead and I hesitated to go over to the place where the car hit him. By the time I got over there he was quickly limping down the street and out of the gate of the apartment complex. Unfortunately, we lived in the part of Tucson where it was all desert with a couple residential developments. I knew finding him in these mountains and bushed would be difficult. He was not wearing his collar. I hiked straight for the first 12 hours he was missing, not even stopping to eat. 24 hours went by, then 48, and finally after 200 color fliers posted in the 7 mile radius and visits to almost every animal hospital and shelter I was praying to at least find his body. I could not stomach the thought of him being alone, hurt, and scared. 72 hours went by, and I was giving up hope. That day in Tucson (a sunday) it poured rain. My heart was shattered and I was starting to wonder if I would ever give up. This all occurred the thursday before spring break. We had plans to go to Mexico, however, I was positive I did not want to go. My mom urged me to go, giving me a sense of closure on losing Jack. I left that monday, crying the whole way out of Tucson, still looking under every bush to see if he was there. When we finally crossed the boarder into Mexico I got a text from my Mom that said, "Call me when you get there." My first instinct was hope, but quickly turned to a rational thought that she probably just wants to make sure I was ok. A couple hours later we got there. My cell phone didn't work, and I was out of the room most of the day trying to get my mind off of my puppy. When we got back to the room, the phone rang. It was my mom, she said, "You know how I said that anything is possible?" I couldn't breath, I quickly said, "I know, I know, you've said this everyday." Then she said, I could tell she was crying, "Guess who I am looking at in the backyard?" I screamed. I couldn't even fathom how this could be real. My puppy survived four days in the desert and is at my Mom's house in Phoenix. I kept asking "Are you sure it is Jack, are you sure?" And she said, "one ear up, one ear down." I cried, with shock and a relief I thought I would not ever feel again when Jack came to my mind. My mom had went down to Tucson when she got a call, coincidently, from a neighbor in the retirement community near by who had seen us looking for Jack that night and promised to keep an eye out. He had said he found Jack and found the poster and called my Mom. It was truly a miracle. To this day, I still look at Jack, and wonder how I got to lucky to have my baby back. I tell my mom on a weekly basis, I can't believe we found him. Jack has brought unbelievable joy to my life at a time I was struggling. He was my best friend when I needed someone to cuddle me. And he is the most loving, intelligent, and kind dog I have ever met. I am so lucky to be able to call Jack Pack mine.

Jack Pack is one of the cutest puppies I've ever seen. What an inspiring story - thanks for sharing it. I can only imagine what you were going through. Dogs are quite intuitive creatures. Just maybe it was your persistence, relentlessness and love for Jack that kept him alive and brought him back to you (mixed in with a lot of smarts and survival instinct, too). Hang on to this beauty as long as you can and enjoy many more years together!
