James :)

American Pit Bull Terrier
Male
No

James is a 6 month old pitbull terrier that my wife and I adopted when he was just two weeks old. His mother had a liter of 15 puppies and at the time we decided to adopt him she had killed all but 4. The very next day she killed two more, leaving his sister (the firstborn) as the sole survivor. He was the runt. At the time we got him he weighed only 1/2 a pound and the vet we took him to basically wrote him off saying the he only had a 25% of survival. I tried my best to bottle feed and care for him but he ended up inhaling formula and as a result developed aspiration pneumonia. For the next 3 weeks he rarley left my arms. Although we couldn't afford it, we spent just about everything we had to save his life. Once we took him we couldn't let him die at any and all costs. After a few midnight trips to the animal emergency room, a change of vets, and ALOT of love, he finally pulled through and is now a healthy, happy, 45lb pup that is spoiled rotten. We love him to death and in spite of the expenses and even being forced to move due to our landlord's bias toward pitbulls, (and the repeated protests from our 2 cats, Moochie and Marcus) we wouldn't trade it for the world.

Asking questions like yours is the sign of a great owner -- and, a smart one. Your suspicions are correct -- don't grab and shake his muzzle or engage in any radical play (some even say, avoid tug-of-war)-- you are inadvertently rewarding aggression.

What a cutie he is.. i cant think of what animal he reminds me of, but something in like the african safari. I'm not the best with names tho. But my comment would be that if he is giving you any kind of an aggressive growl, that you should continue that behavior. Doesnt sound like he understand that you are playing. This could lead to someone reaching out to pet him & him snapping & biting them because it looks like the same thing that you are doing to play. He's too young yet, but i definitely suggest puppy classes as soon as he's able to attend. I havent ever had a pitbull, but would like one in the future. They are very headstrong & powerful - and will use these traits if they are not led & trained properly. Take care of that gorgeous boy!! Luv him!

Games that won't be aggressive are usually good. You want to make your dog think. Here is a game: You need 3 cups and a treat, put the treat under one cup and switch the cups around. Bring him over and see if he can find the treat. You can also teach him puppy push ups, teach him sit, down, up, stand; when he has mastered those tell him to do it in the order I wrote, this is a fun activity. I don't know if you like this name but you could call him, oh, maybe I guess Oreo, Mint, Monty, I don't know... He is adorable though!!!

What an adorable puppy! I agree with others, that it is probably not wise to encourage aggressive play, but puppy and dog training classes are a must - for the owners as much as the puppy. My husband and I learnt so much from attending them with our two dogs. I expect a name will just come to you one day and seem perfect. 'Bear' or 'Baby' spring to my mind, but you must know his character so well by now - good luck with him, you're doing a great job.

He's adorable! and I agree with the others, probably not good to encourage aggressive behavior. Names are so personal I'm sure you'll come up with one you can agree on!

What a sweetie you've got there!!! So my suggestions- go with something strong. Like Jack, or Dex. Also, is there a name of a literary character or a name in a song that you like? Ooh, what about Ripple (because of the patterns on his face)? Have fun with it!

He is absolutely adorable. I agree as far as aggressive behavior and traing classes. I have a rottie and with the proper training you will have a wonderful companion, but because they are naturally breed as guard dogs, its not a good idea to encourage aggressive behavior. As far as a name, I agree with luvmyboyz, names are personal, one will just happen to come to you. But I think its great you are reaching out for advice. Please let me know what you decide for a name for your sweet pup :)

HE is so cute i think that you should name his bullet if he he is fast. I think that you should stop leting him bite you because than he might think that it's ok but its not beacuse he might think that he can do it to everyone. and not to scare you:you might get sued a

I agree with all of the above comments. He is such a sweet little boy and you deserve a lot of credit for taking him at such a young age. A name will come to you probably just out of the blue!!!! You would be wise to take him to puppy classes, they're good for everyone.

WOW! thank you to everyone who took the time to leave a comment. i didnt realize i would receive so many comments in such a small amount of time. we really want to get him into obedience classes as soon as he's old enough. about how much are they? i am still working on a name but hooch is the one that keeps coming back to me along with neko. not so sure its the perfect name but thats why i wanted to generate some ideas from people. thanks again for all your suggestions. if anyone wants to offer their dog up as a namesake we may end up naming our lil guy after him. the best names are usually taken anyway. our cat didnt have a name for over a month b4 he became marcus so we're pretty familliar with the routine. we just want to teach him his name b4 he thinks its "no". lol. i am going to stop rough housing with him as well. we just found out that he has "fighting" blood in him but we are determined to defy the sterotypes. (the people we got him from do NOT engage in dog fights. his mother was a rescue that was happened to get pregnant by their red nose. not an intentional breed) we are doing everything possible to see that he is a loving well adjusted dog in the coming years. however we have already decided to muzzle him in public b/c u can never be too careful. also, one of my cats keeps attacking him and im worried that he will retaliate against our moochie when he is older. i have cut the cats nails n he seems to have left him alone since but i am still worried. you can tell that he remembers b/c he acts differently around each cat. does anybody have cats and a pitt or a similar situation that could offer some insight? I would really appreciate it. o yea, and how do you make it so you can be rated on the biscuit thingy? Thanks again everyone.
