All in the Family

Kita is 6 years old and has lived with me since she was 5 years old. She was used as a breeder and sold when her previous owner decided not to breed her anymore. Since then, I've learned that not all private breeders treat their breeding dogs well. Our first few weeks were a bit rocky. I chose Kita based on her online description to be my Emotional Support Animal with an idea of training her to be a Service Animal. I soon realized Kita had emotional issues of her own and, based on some of her behaviors, could surmise some of the mistreatment she had received. What I thought was a well-loved, well-treated dog from a breeder turned out, in essence, to be a rescue. Kita was so fearful that it looked like she might have to be put down. Since she had expressed her fear by biting, she would not be adoptable. After I calmed down after a particularly bad day, I realized her bad behavior was caused by a flashback to earlier times, much like my own anxiety attacks. I then set up a "room" for her that was similar to what she grew up with to provide familiarity but decreased the amount of time she spent in her room while increasing the amount of freedom she experienced elsewhere in our apartment. She was also given (and still takes) antidepressant medication. One year later, Kita is enjoying regular belly rubs, watching TV, and sleeping in a comfy bed with her blankie. The greatest thing, to me, is to give her a belly rub and see a smile come to her face. Kita is learning that no room in the apartment is off limits and gets excited when I ask her to go with me, especially, for some reason, the bathroom! Kita is now officially a "Service Dog in Training'. She enjoys helping me when I go "shopping", sitting beside me on a bench to people watch, and cuddling on the bed or couch. Her personality comes out more as time goes by. I enjoy watching her do normal doggie behaviors for the first time and finding out it's fun and there's no punishment. Kita has a wonderful sweet heart. I can't imagine my life without this beautiful girl by my side every step of the way. We are BFF.

What a lovely story! I work closely with puppy mill rescue groups and the issues these dogs come with are so sad. Glad to hear how well she has adjusted. Sadly some do not fair as well as she. I wish you and Kita a long and happy life together.

Bless you, and sweet Kita! How fortunate she was to have found you, and you her. I too shudder to think about what may have happened to her in the past. There is a special place in Hell for people who abuse animals or children. May you both a long and wonderful life together. Your story is very touching. Hugs from Oliver & Henry, and their Mum, in London, Ontario
