Lexi is in a foster home, and is currently not at the shelter. Please find contact info at the end of her story. Lexi is a two year-old pointer mix. She is everything a working pointer should be smart, driven, independent, and high-energy. She is a beautiful dog with the ability to figure out complex tasks. She needs plenty of vigorous activity. This need for exercise (preferably off lead) coupled with her intelligence means that ongoing and lifelong training and activity is an absolute necessity. Lexi's ideal home would be one that believes dogs are not just part of, but central to, a very active home life. Do you take your dog running with you, then to agility class one night and rally class the next? Do you enjoy a dog who is almost always on, and think it's fun to figure out new ways to test their mental aptitude? Do you appreciate that having very clear criteria and boundaries are critical to managing a dog who can easily take advantage of ambiguity? Then you are the right home for Lexi! She is not a dog for the typical dog-loving home. She needs hours of exercise (both body or mind) every day. In her foster home her typical day looks like this: 1) Get up, go out, play with her canine foster brother. 2) Chase the ball for 30 minutes at a full out run in large backyard. 3) Go for a 30 minute walk with training drills along the way. 4) Crate while humans go to work (or go to work with humans). 5) Get up, work on food puzzles and find it games. 6) Chase ball/go for run/go to class. 7) Work on puzzle games and more training exercises; maybe learn a new trick. 8) Sack out on couch for the night. If Lexi doesn't get mind and body exercise every day, she will make work for herself which never turns out well. An idle Lexi is a bored Lexi, and a bored Lexi is impossible to live with. Her foster family has worked hard to undo the bad habits and behavior that she has picked up previously. Driven, focused dogs can fall into serious behaviors like resource guarding. Her forever family needs to realize that in order to get a calm, sweet dog who loves life and respects boundaries, they must be willing to put in the effort required of a working dog. Lexi is a lot of work and also a lot of fun. She is an incredibly endearing companion. Her foster family adores her antics, and her focus never ceases to amaze them. Yes, she is a lot of dog, but the pay-off is one of the most incredible canines you have ever met. Lexi is a dog for a dog person. She bonds tightly to her people, can live with other dogs and has lived with cats. Because of her drive and focus, we will not adopt Lexi to a home with children HOW TO ADOPT - Please fill out a Dog Adoption Application and email or fax it to the Seattle Animal Shelter Foster Dog Program.
