All in the Family

American Foxhound / German Shepherd Dog

After years of wishing and wanting a dog, my husband finally relented. I checked the shelters daily, looking for my ideal dog, a Yellow Lab. Sociable and America's favorite dog. Well, apparently so because anything that was even part Lab was snatched up in the blink of an eye. Well, except those who were part Pit Bull, the shelters were full of Pits. Labs are very expensive from a breeder and even more than we wanted to pay from a rescue group. The Dog Whisperer often reminds people that you don't get the dog you want, you get the dog you need. I knew that my husband had raised German Shepherds years ago, not a breed I really wanted because of their size. He also said the one dog he didn't want was a Beagle. Well, I saw this dog and the shelter had named him Monty. We went to visit and the County Animal services is like a prison, the cages are all inside in rows and the barking and howling is ear-splitting. When we found Monty's cage he sidled up to the bars, never barked just wanted affection. When we went back to the desk to see about a meet and greet outside, we were told that the dog had been adopted and returned because he BIT someone! That could not be good and we decided to keep looking. We traveled to a private shelter to look at two more dogs, each had issues that we might not want to tackle, plus they were pretty big. On the way home we made the choice to go back to the first place the next day and see Monty again. A volunteer brought him out, he was so nutty - running in circles, rolling over and over on the astro turf. He finally settled down. The volunteer said that if he had bitten someone he would have been in quarantine, which he wasn't. She got more information - apparently the new owner had company at the door. The lunged at him and pretty much scared them into returning him. Long story short, we decided to take him home. Oh, he's part Shepherd - my husband says he part BEAGLE . . .oops . . . maybe with a little Golden Retriever. No Lab. His name has been changed to MAX - he didn't know his name before and still doesn't. But, we'll work on that. Also, he doesn't come when called, more work. Most of all, he doesn't like all men - if they are carrying a bag he will go after them, not biting, just growling. BUT, he loves women and girls and is great at the Dog Park. Men in stores or at the park, no problem. More work. So, a little sleep deprived, but getting better. MAX will be a good boy for us - the dog we needed or needed us. I think we saved his life!
