I found a Beagle running disoriented and scared in a middle of a busy avenue in Brooklyn, NY in June 2005. It took some time and effort of a couple of people to catch him into safety from a drive way and discover he had bleeding front paws and shreads of skin hanging down. He was skinny to ribbs and spine protrusion, and I took him to an emergency Vet office from the scene. Needless to say, he had neither collar, nor chip ID. He was estimated to be 1 & 1/2 years of age intact Beagle. It took us two weeks of bandages, antibiotics (oral and topical), soaking his meaty paws in antiseptic solution while singing, pettind, kissing, and assuring him everything is going to be allright! My first dog Lucy ( 5 y.o. at the time ) was not happy at first and guarded her numerouse toys for a couple of weeks, but the new commer behaved perfectly respectful to her rules and didn't touch her goodies, occasionally leaning his sad nose to her rear end, and eventually he had won her heart without a single fight! They have been inseparable since. I named him Phoenix, and he started his new and happy life in his forever home with me and Lucy. He has been always good with other dogs, but it took him a couple of years to start trusting other people. Can you blame him? Lucy tought him good manners, such as not stealing food from mama's plate; hunting squirrels every morning off leash in Prospect Park and come back from the woods when called, and you cannot pay him to leave his mama! Yes, on their "last pee-pee walk" at night they both go without leashes, and my boy follows me every step of my way! You probably guessed by now where he sleeps, aha? Under blanket at my feet. Even though he is an example of one trully mama's boy, and can get scared of a plastic bag hanging on a door nub, I love him dearly, and call him "My Fearless Man of the House"! Most importantly, before I had a Beagle, I had no idea how especially loving and affectionate they are! I trully think only one of my grandmothers loved me as much as Phoenix does! He is absolutely precious, happy boy! I thank God for both of my dogs every day!
