This is Snowy, our beloved 3 year old Eskie, who recently (12/2/08) died an unnecessary death due to the neglect of his original owner, a shelter and a rescue organization. None of them bothered to test Snowy for heartworm disease and he was never on HW prevention. Fortunately, not all shelters and rescues are this irresponsible. My husband and I adopted Snowy unknowingly with this disease and did everything to try and save him but by the time we started his treatments it was too late. He had a severe case of heartworms. We were blessed for only six months while loving and caring for our precious Snowy. Words can't express how badly I miss him :o( Please do not take heartworm prevention lightly. As long as there are mosquitoes there will be a risk of heartworm disease, regardless of where you live. Please do not confuse this disease with "intestinal" worms as "heart" worms are much more severe and if not treated early will be fatal. The advantages of HW prevention FAR outweigh any disadvantages of using this preventative. The risk a person takes by not safeguarding their dog isn't fair to the dog. Anyone who says that heartworm prevention isn't necessary is plain ignorant. They have never experienced what I, and countless other people, have to make such a statement. I wish the best of health to everyone's pets. Please use heartworm prevention once a month all year round including your cats, whether they are indoor or outdoor, because there is no cure for cats who contract HW disease. I love you my precious Snowy and I hope you and I are helping a lot of pet mommies and daddies realize just how important it is to be tested and given a yummy heartworm chewable every month- We will be together again my sweet angel...
