All in the Family

Great Dane / Labrador Retriever

I'll start by saying Sophie was the sweetest dog I've ever met. In her short life, she had been through 9 homes. It was the same every time: "We didn't know she would get so big." My uncle took her in for a time and promised his friends who had had her before that he would find her a good home. She then came to me. Sophie had been beaten her whole life. She would quiver and shake if I so much as picked up a pencil near her. She wasn't very quick to learn tricks and her housetraining was slow and tedious. My veterinarian said being hit in the head probably contributed to this. Sophie was an angel. She had been through so much but all she wanted to do was love. It didn't take very long for her to begin trusting me and that's when she really began to flourish. She was affectionate, sweet, and spunky. She would jump up to put her paws on my shoulders and lick my face. She didn't realize her size. She took up my whole bed but she just loved to cuddle. In February 2009, my family and I went away for a few days and left my animals in the care of a family friend. One night, he let the dogs out into the yard to go to the bathroom and must have forgotten to latch the gate. Sophie got out and found her way to the pond next to my house. She walked onto the ice and fell through. She couldn't get a grip on the ice and she drowned. It was a complete accident and I place blame on no one. Everything happens for a reason. Sophie had a hard life, but she passed away while in a home where she would've never been harmed or given away. She was such a special girl. I loved her and cared about her very much. She'll always be in my heart.

Sad Story; such a hard life for a sweet, beautiful girl, but at least she had a chance to experience love. Too bad she had not found you first. I have zero tolerance for anyone who mistreats an animal, and believe the laws for animal abuse are WAY too lax. But I'm glad you showed her that not all humans are bad, and she had a chance, even if it was brief, to know a loving home.
