Caboo's mom says: Caboo was born into a life of neglect. I met him after he and eight other dogs were rescued and brought to an Idaho guest ranch to await forever homes. Every day I visited Caboo's kennel and took him hiking or running. For the first few weeks he seemed not to care who was holding the other end of the leash -- he'd had his heart broken once and was not going to trust again lightly. Soon, however, he warmed up to me and it became obvious that he had chosen me to be his one person. I was still in college and afraid I didn't have the resources or the stability to take a dog into my life, but once he made himself mine, I knew we had to make it work. We relied a lot on help from friends and family that first year! It's been three years now since Caboo came to live with me. We finally have a permanent home and a fenced yard he can run and play in. His favorite things are food, water, running, carrying his backpack, going on car trips, wading in the Huron River and chasing his Jolly Ball. He loves having possessions and shows them off by carrying them around in his mouth. He is my ever-vigilant guardian and the untiring companion of more miles run, hiked, and skied than I can count. Owning an Akita who bears the scars of abuse and neglect is not a challenge to be taken on lightly, but Caboo makes it worth it every day.
I still erupt into tears of indignation and anger over peoples heartless treatment and disposal of pets. Thank you for letting Caboo have a heartwarming ending to his story! I think Quasimodo covered all else to say. Except, I'll add what an exceptionally intelligent looking gent he is!

i've always had so much respect for rescuers-all of my dogs were adopted but someone had to take them out of their situation first...caboo is gorgeous-his personality really shines thru in your pictures...thank you so much for giving him another chance! aahhooo

I HATE what happens to pit bulls....they do not deserve their bad rep OR the horrible treatment they endure.
People who mistreat animals should be thoroughly horsewhipped!
what a stunner.the intelligent eyes the strong legs oh ...gorgeous!recscued an akita/shepherd ourselves and tho she is shepherd colour she has the fluffy akita tail.i can only imagine cuddling a pup covered in that fluff!!heaven.nothing more satisfying than rescuin a pup and winning them over.life job done!

I've adopted two abandoned dogs -- both little guys. How impressive you took on such a big guy and had the perserverance to work thru problems as basic as not really having a place to keep him. Cabo is so dignified and heart-melting. The photo of him showing off his pan (big enough to bathe one of my little guys) brought tears to my eyes. Bless you both!

Most people would shy away from a dog like an Akita because they're so misunderstood, just like pit bulls.
So many of those photos melted my heart and brought tears to my eyes.
They really do choose you don't they? I know my rescued boy did! As hard as he's been to work with and handle, I wouldn't change it for the world.
This face makes all of the trials and tribulations of taking in a rescue pup all worthwhile. A touching story, and such a handsome boy!

I have a friend that had a female Akita for many years and Kara (the dogs name) was very protective of Wendy. Kara was such a well behaved dog and she always wanted to please her momma. I have a rescued pit mix that is loving, playful, and loyal. She has brought such happiness into our house. Many years of love and joy for you both.

My dogs adore their Jolly Ball! They like to shake it by the rope, beating themselves in the noggen 'till they're silly. Luna is this coming Monday's Grown-up Puppy, look for her and her Jolly Ball.

Those are the prettiest Akita markings I've ever seen.
I usually give Akitas a wide berth when I'm out walking my big doggy, but if I saw Caboo, I'd have to try to find a way to come over and pet him!

I finally joined the forum so I could comment on you and Caboo. I am so glad to hear of your story, and Caboo is a magnificent pooch. What a gorgeous face! And that coat! I have had 7 rescue dogs, mostly abused pit bulls, and they have all been so loving and loyal once they knew they'd found a forever home with someone who would give them nothing but cuddles and biscuits. It sounds like you have found the same thing with Caboo. It is so nice that you took such a broken hearted and rather fearsome (to those who don't know him!) fellow into your home and heart, despite some of the initial hardships. It truly is worth it to know you have saved a lost creature and found love. 3 cheers for you and Caboo, and I'd give him a zillion biscuits if I could!
