Guiding Eyes Guide Dogs

Dog Breed: Unknown

Meet the Guiding Eyes Guide Dogs! These special dogs are enriching the lives of blind and visually impaired men and women by providing them with the freedom to travel safely, thereby assuring greater independence, dignity and new horizons of opportunity. Guiding Eyes for the Blind is an internationally accredited nonprofit guide dog school that provides superbly bred Guiding Eyes dogs, professional training and follow-up support to blind and visually impaired students at no charge. Since 1954, the school has graduated more than 7,000 guide dog teams. Guiding Eyes Headquarters and Training Center is located in Yorktown Heights, New York and the Canine Development Center is in Patterson, New York. The Guiding Eyes Puppy Raising Program is comprised of more than 400 volunteers from Maine to North Carolina. Puppy raisers - often considered the heart and soul of the organization - nurture young puppies and familiarize them with everyday situations. Raisers establish the loving human bond that is the foundation for the puppy's future role in a guide dog team. Guiding Eyes runs local classes where raisers are trained and supported during the 18 months the pups live in their homes. When the raisers have completed their work, they return the dogs to Guiding Eyes for evaluation, and hopefully, guide dog training. Numerous volunteer opportunities exist.
