Snoozing!!! Awww...snoozing..... I bet he is tuckered out from a long day at the beach. Was it hard to get all of the sand out of his feeties, or did he take care of that pretty well on his own?

I am so sorry that you lost your first Indy. I don't think that non-dog-owners ever really understand how deep a loss that is. I've lost pets before, but losing a dog isn't the same as losing a pet--it's more like losing a child/friend. I'm glad you were able to put some of that negative emotion into a positive action by adopting a new friend.

Yay, Indy II! :)

I'm so glad you rescued him!! Julia, a pet that isn't a dog is just a precious and loved as a pet that is. It's just as hard to lose another kind of pet.

I just meant that you can often form a bond with a dog or cat that is different than other animals. I mean, I grieved terribly when I lost pets that were not dogs, but when I lost my first dog, it was different. It has been years and I am still not "over" it. I had her from a small puppy, and she helped me through a lot of difficult times. I just feel like it's a more even relationship when the pet involved seems truly capable of loving you back and understanding your feelings. I did not mean any offense. As a lover of all animals, and someone who has had many different kinds of pets, I do know that it is possible to have all kinds of different animal friends.

Maybe what I meant to say is that people who have never really experienced a deep and reciprocal relationship with an animal don't understand the depth of the loss--a common response from people who aren't pet owners or animal people is kind of a "oh, that's too bad" response, as opposed to the sympathy that is truly deserved.

Julia - I kind of think I know what you mean...I have had many pets but with a dog, they follow you around all the time...are usually right by your side, inside the house and outside. You very seldom take fish, birds, turtles and others with you for a drive or walk to the park..all the time. I think that is what you meant by a closer bond, so yes, I too think you grieve just a bit more for dogs, but that does not mean you love your other pets any less!
