They are at a good age for adoption, so that is good news. :)

I have been thinking more and more about rescuing an older dog one day. The boys and I have been talking about it, and we all agree, that depending on the stages in our lives, a 3 or 4, or 2 year old dog, that is house trained, (accidents to be expected at first), and kind, will be next. I haven't thought about size very much, colour, type of coat, or type of breed/mix as my only requirement would be temperament, as well as lifestyle. 8)

This thread, along with looking for such a dog for a friend's Mother, on Petfinder, had me finding all sorts of dogs I would adopt tomorrow if I could. I think the tide for adopting slightly older dogs, and even the very old ones, is changing with our demographic, or at least I hope it is.

No new adoptions of dogs posted on here. :/

I took Crush out again today, and as usual she went nuts. She has sure kept herself slim. May not look it, but you can feel it.

Isn't she adorable?

And this is Cashmere, she came to the shelter in June, participated in the two week Camp Love-A-Pet training program, got adopted in August, and came back for "Needs training." -_- Sigh, you got a shelter dog.... Do I need to say more?

She's a really sweet girl though, and a very interesting color. The trainer has been working with her and Skip for the C.L.A.S.S. program.

I was conversing with the trainer while she did her business, looked down and saw this. She got a click and some treats for it :)

Warning, sad content.

Crush was euthanized today, she was getting to the point where she couldn't handle the kennel life, no rescue would take her and no one was interested in her. So I took her out for about 30 minutes right before hand, let her run, taught her some new stuff (Had her throwing herself into a play bow and barking on cue, it was cute, she had fun) I let her get in my lap and basically just tossed normal rules out the window and let her have fun. Gave her a big strip of jerky when she went back as well.

Cel, you are truly a blessing.

Thank goodness she knew your love and compassion. You know I am sending you huge hugs as we've already discussed this, in private. I'm going to leave it at that as you know how I feel.

Long may you run, Crush!

We had a adoption event today, I was a dog walker/question answerer/salesman/Person who takes out dogs for people to greet.

It was a lot of fun, I'll be doing it again tomorrow.

I'll start out with my favorite girl right now, her name is Shelby. They have her as a Shepherd mix but she looks more like a APBT to me. Anyhow, she's a super sweet, well focused, confident girl. She's one of those that will gladly hang out around the house with you all day but could also keep up with you if you're very active. She's very responsive, already clicker savvy, well mannered when greeting people. And when you talk to her she tilts her head and listens.

And this is Monkey, he wasn't taken out much at the adoption event because of his age. He wasn't noisy at all, slept a lot of the time. And well, was like a puppy.

He's the puppy from this picture(I thought he got adopted but actually went into foster care)

Lava was there too. :) (I posted about how his temperament a few posts back) He was quite entertaining, trying to climb on the table, climbing on bricks, he's a confident boy.

And this is Sylvia, I'm generally not a fan of small dogs, especially Chihuahuas but I really like her. She's one of those that just can't hold still when she meets someone new. She such cool looking eyes as well, and the first blue Chihuahua I've seen.

And Skip was there as well, I love him, he's such a awesome dog. He'd be a favorite of mine if he wasn't the trainer's favorite. I figured that gives him an advantage so for now Shelby is my favorite. lol The trainer is working with him for C.L.A.S.S. The CEO of the shelter is fearful of dogs because of a bad experience he had when he was younger (still loves them, just avoidant) and today he volunteered to help walk a dog. He picked Skip since he was just so well mannered. He really liked him. :)

And this is Jackson, he's just a happy fella. Loves people and toys, I let him play with the ball I got Dakota today and he was entertaining to watch.

Cel, there are so many beautiful dogs at "your" Shelter! Each one of them shines in their own right.

I loved the Chihuahua, Sylvia, especially since I've met Gizzie and Jose, who totally rock! You would love the Gizz-meister, and sweet Jose. I also think Sylvia is a lovely name for her and reminds me of the song "Sylivia's Mother" by Dr. Hook! Don't look now, but my age is showing.

Shelby seems very sweet and I can see why she'd be a fave of yours as she looks like she wants to "work" and please. Who can resist the head tilt? I can't. (Oliver has a perpetual one, which I just thought was a cute trait of his until his Neurologist told me otherwise! )

Monkey is the perfect name for that adorable puppy!

Lava could be a handful, but for the right person, he could also be the perfect companion. As is the case with most of these dogs, they just need guidance and love.

Isn't it ironic that the CEO of the Shelter has a fear of dogs. I think that's wonderful that he has taken a job, which I assume is Voluntary, with dogs perhaps in an attempt to overcome his fear. Skip looks like the dog to help him with that.

Jackson is entirely too cute, and will hopefully be scooped up in no time.

My heart still breaks for Crush, and I hope each and everyone of these darling angels find their perfect forever home SOON!

You are making a tremendous contribution, and I'm sure when discussing these dogs with potential "adopters", you are the best possible person to let someone know, in a positive manner, what each dogs' needs are. I also think you would be excellent at screening people!

The pictures you post really bring home just how many wonderful dogs are out there, waiting for a forever, loving person or family. I hope this event is a tremendous success. I also think the dogs do better in a Foster situation than in a Kennel, so kudos to all those who Foster, and those who Foster and fail!!!

I do like small dogs, my wording came off wrong a bit. I meant they're not generally dogs I have interest in or would consider owning. (partially because they seem so fragile in my mind)

I honestly think Lava is a very easy puppy, maybe I'm just used to crazies. His "puppy antics" were the cute comical ones. :D

When I first heard about the CEO being scared of dogs I thought it was a joke, but he does genuinely care about the animals, he's been putting in a good word for Skip.

As for screening, I'm much, much, much pickier than we're supposed to be so I try to stick to the dogs main needs.

Good news, Sylvia got adopted! And I liked the lady who adopted her as well.

It also turns out that Monkey is actually Autumn's puppy.

Darling Shelby

And handsome Skip (all the same dogs today, except a puppy who got adopted yesterday.) .... I was looking over his paperwork and talking to a customer.... he's listed a Pit Bull mix... When the lady asked I suggested something along the lines of GreyhoundXBorder Collie.

Annnnd a little guy I look pictures of for pet of the week. He had a weird name... I think it was Hocks. Very energetic little guy, praying he gets a home that will take him to training classes. We do offer a discount for adopted dogs. lol

Wow, a lot has gone on! I'm so sad to hear about Crush, I thought she was gorgeous, but it's so fantastic that you could give her a happy time on her last day with you.

I love Cashmere! So glad to hear she has (by the sound of it) a fantastic new home!

Shelby is adorable with her head tilting! Dogs are just such good listeners but it's like she's understanding you as well! XD

Naturally Monkey is also cute! And I approve of the name

Cel, are you in California? I swear I saw Shelby at the dog park yesterday! A super rambunctious puppy that wanted to body slam my itty-bitty baby! :o :D

They had just adopted her, too. Just beautiful markings--so sharp and glossy! Same ears, same shaped face, really, this one maybe was a little younger and not quite as "stream-lined" as Shelby. I know Shelby'll get adopted soon. She's just beautiful.

(just an aside-I never blame dogs for being too rough with my dog. With very few exceptions, the dogs we encounter at the parks are friendly and playful. Some just play too rough for my much smaller, long-boned girl. I have to constantly gauge whether it's a Divali crowd or not and leash her up and go if it isn't. It's the way the owners handle their dog that often decides it. I love it when someone shouts over to me while their dog is trying to catch and wrestle Divali to the ground, "He's friendly!" Well, of course he is, but that type of play is likely to get my dog injured! Anyway...don't mean to hijack this thread!)

Oh, and what a cool dog Sylvia is! So happy she got a home with someone you're happy about. (I think I'm a lot like you about potential adopters!)

So sorry for poor sweet Crush. So sad.

I'm glad to hear Sylvia got adopted! I thought she was beautiful, and I would have taken her in a heartbeat.

You have some wonderful adoptable dogs in your shelter. How wonderful that you get to be a part of the adoptions, that has to be a great feeling.

I do indeed live in California, the shelter is a city away from me. It's located in Redding,CA

And I think a dog park would be too overwhelming for Shelby, when the trainer did a dog intro with her dog, she was scared at first but came around and was doing the run up, freak out, and run away play tactic.

And thank you all for the kind comments.
