Altaylor, where are you located? Is it possible to have a dog shipped? How expensive is it to adopt one of the dogs? I am very interested myself in two of the dogs. Marilee and Sugar, Would have taken Peaches as I already have 2 pit mixes. Our the other dogs in permenent homes or just foster homes? Sorry this is all questions but it's something I need to know. I appreciate the info. Marne

Poor sweet dog. Out of all the dogs Baker and his big sad brown eyes stood out the most for me.
Rest in Peace Baker, even though I never met you I know that you were a great dog.

How could anyone ever do such an inhumane killng like this to an innocent creature?! I HATE all of those people at this high kill shelter! How can they sleep at night?! Why don't they feel any remorse for these animals who are tortured to death at their hands!? It makes me sick to think of all the people who help gas the dogs and tolerate it! I hate them all.

It's not the people at the shelters we should be angry with. It's the people who allow their animals to breed indiscriminately, without thought for what may happen to the puppies. The people at the shelters are doing the job that the owners of the parent dogs should have done. I can't imagine what fortitude and strength it must take to go to work everyday, knowing what you are being asked to do. While I am thoroughly appalled at the primitive methods some of the shelters use to euthanize unwanted animals, they are providing a much needed service. Until there are no unwanted dogs we need these people. If everyone, and I mean EVERYONE spayed and neutered, it would mean the end of shelters. Of course, it would mean the end of the family mutt too, but which would you rather have? For the one family mutt that you take home to love, there may have been ten pups, three of which found good homes, maybe. The rest, eh, who cares? Not the "breeder", or he wouldn't have bred the bitch in the first place! Maybe they found homes, but they are so badly bred that they end up with horrible diseases, or bad skeletal structures, or bad temperaments, and are sent to the shelters as "bad dogs".

I have spoken with many shelter workers who work in kill shelters. To a one, they are caring and compassionate. They see the futility of their compassion, however. For every bitch they spay and adopt out, twenty more come in. (In the interest of fair debate, I made up that statistic...)
Do you know that some government run agencies don't make allowances for food and water for condemned animals? I know one young woman who came to work after a three day weekend to find one of the dogs had not been watered in all that time. The management said, "Why bother? He's dead in a couple of days anyways." She was appalled, as any right thinking person would be, and promptly fed and watered the poor animal, who was very grateful. She held his head while he died, and cried for him, although no else ever would.

Let's not condemn the shelter workers. Instead condemn the irresponsible pet owner. Especially the bastard that sits outside in the mall parking lot with a box full of puppies, marked "FREE". I hate those f%ckers....

I would be happy to hear other people's ideas on how to stop this travesty.

I truely think each and everyone one of us has to do their Part,my dogs we all unwanted by someone else. lucky, my 14 year old was dumped with 7 brothers and one sister plus mom a full bloodied beagle as best I could tell.We kept Lucky and had him fixed , found a program the humane soc. has here about dumpped animal and helped get the rest fixed and tried to find them homes. Speck came to us when no one else wanted him ,their loss ,He was fixed and so was my Baby girl. I don't beleive in back yard breeders but till we can get them to stop someone has to take care of the puppies.Lucky is a mixed breed and way healthier than my reg. dog so maybe the mutts don't get some of the health issues fullbloods due? I know I will have an other dog when the right one finds me,and it probably will be an mutt.I guess the piont of my rant is if you look you can find help getting your dog fixed, we all need to do our part and try and keep unwanted animals as low in numbers as possible. That said if I could afford it I'd have way to many.

I agree with you Brenda...SPAY and NEUTER your pets!!!

Living in a rural area, I see so many that don't believe in it, or don't want to "ruin" their hunting dog!
Some people just don't want to bother. So it's easier to dump a litter of pups than spend $100 and never have to worry about it??? That just doesn't make any sense to me. :?

I try to avoid going to the animal shelter, it just breaks my heart. But going to see Brody yesterday, there were so many beautiful, well-behaved dogs that are unwanted. The rescue had four buildings full of dogs and 30 more dogs in foster homes! I wish I could take them all, but sadly that's not possible and it still won't resolve the problem. :(

altaylor, You are a wonderful person for trying to help all these lovely dogs. We need more people like you in this world!

I would just like to stand up and say "BRAVO, Phyrie!" There is tremendous stress in a shelter environment. No one wants to 'sleep' an animal just becuase there was no home for them. It is a horrific job.

Thank you for that Phyrie. It is absolutely not the fault of those who work at the shelters.

My heart breaks for Baker and for all the dogs who die because there aren't enough homes for all the dogs we people stupidly and selfishly bring into this world. Thank you, Phyrie, for saying it so well. And thank you, Altaylor, for reminding us all that this happens every day.

Thats true Phyrie I probably should have thought about where the dogs were coming from in the first place, instead I just centered my anger at the most visible source. After reading your description about the employees in the kill shelters I understand how hard it must be for those people to put the dogs down, I never knew. It must be so terrible to try to save all the dogs but never really suceed, I feel so bad for them.
I think that if vets and shelters offer free or very cheap spaying/neutering costs that will substancially cut amount of strays. I think I will do that, when I am a vet after highschool and college, I wont mind working for free if it helps save animals.

Pawgiyo, thats a wonderful thought. But part of the problem is some people don't try .There are some place you can find help to get your dog spayed or neutered. Not ever place has this but some does you have to look. Some vets will take payments or give discounts for seniors or people who might not be able to get it done other wise.some people don't know helps is avaiable. they need to check with your shelters or vets office.
