The Ultimate Puppy Challenge

Postby BraveTyphlosion on Tue Sep 18, 2012 7:59 pm

Finally got this up.

Name: Gabrielle, Brave, Gabi, whatever you want to call me
Gender: Female
Age: 18
Canada AB Edmonton

Other Pets: Tobi(Cat|Siamese|Adult), Oliver(Cat|Moggie|Adult)

Hi, I'm Gabrielle and I am soon to be a first time owner sometime in mid to later october. I'm young, determined, and have wanted a dog for as long as I can remember. I currently have the money, energy, and time to raise a puppy. I also have plenty of support from my neighborhood and mother. I am currently 18 and will be working towards becoming a vet tech. At the moment I am taking a year and a bit off to make some extra money and raise a puppy. I live with my mother and all my expenses are paid for except the dog which I have agreed to pay for fully(The dog, supplies, food, vet costs, etc.). I will be doing most of the work but it is certainly important that the whole family is part of the dogs life.

I will not be going anywhere any time soon. I have the best Mom in the world and she has agreed to let me live in the current house we own for as long as I like. After completeing post secondary my mother plans on moving out to BC where the weather is a little warmer I will be required to pay for taxes on the house but while I'm still into education I don't have to pay a dime. Either way is a wonderfully affordable deal making it very possible to own a dog for many years.

I admit, yes, a Doberman is not exactly the ideal first time dog but I seem to have a strange attraction towards them. I am more than willing to work for this puppy and look forward to many years of unconditional doggy love.

Picture [I have no idea how to move pictures from my phone xD I'm a wee bit technologically challenged]

Name: Teddy
Gender: Male
Breed: Doberman Pinscher
Colour: Black and Tan with particularily dark facial features
Cropped: No
Docked: Yes
Born On: August 10th 2012

Teddy will arrive at roughly around 10 weeks of age. He will be neutered since I have no intentions of breeding at any point in time. I think one dog is plenty of work and all the sloppy kisses I need.

I might add more to this later

Welcome Gabi! I love your excitement and your desire to learn from experience owners, we are more than happy to help.
We have several members in Canada, I'm more to the south in the U.S. nearer to the other Border.

I did work as a Vet Tech, go for it! I found during my Vet Tech days I enjoyed Behaviour and gravitated more to that and less to the medical. The information is priceless with owning a dog, my training & experience has saved me so much with my animals. You just have to know when your over your head and get to the vet, of course, it makes the appointments so much easier as the training helps you to better understand the issue you might be facing.

Your situation sounds great, what a wonderful mother you have.

I'm Kian, I have 2 Aussies, Allie and Ice. We live on a farm in the Southwestern U.S. Due to my time constraints, I'm not DP as much I use to be. I will be watching for the day you bring Teddy home, so exciting!

Welcome Gabi and soon Teddy!!

Gabi, what a wonderful Introduction!!! :D

I'm so technologically challenged, I need my sons to help me more often than not. However, many of us use Photobucket. It's a free site, and it supplies you with an IMG code specifically for message boards. If you can upload your pictures onto Photobucket, it is a simply step of "copy & paste" to put them on here. It also gives you an off-site free storage facility for your photos should they ever be lost. 8)

We have several members in Western Canada. One of whom is also in Edmonton, I believe, or just outside of there. Another member is from BC, and I visited her this summer. She has family in Calgary. We have a few BC transplants on our site as well who now live in other locations. There are quite a few of us "Canucks" on this site, from coast to coast.

You sound extremely well organized for the arrival of Teddy. You've given this a great deal of thought which is how it should be. I'm glad his ears aren't cropped. We have another member on this site who has Dobermans, and she is about your age and lives in England. In our General Section, she has a page called "Emma and Kay, and the Doogles" that has tons of pictures, and a few videos. She also has JRT's and does extremely well with her training. I'm sure you two will have a great deal to share. You should check out her thread.

After having waited SO long, you must be extremely excited about Teddy's impending arrival. You have all of your ducks in a row for school as well as housing. Your Mum sounds like a wonderful woman. :D Clearly she has raised a wonderful daughter. ♥

As Kian said, we are all here to help. I usually pop on around 7ish (EST) for a little while each evening. I don't often manage to come on during the day, but may have to start soon.

Welcome to the Daily Puppy!

Awh thanks guys, you're too nice ^///^

I am very interested in the behavior side of Vet Tech but I do also have a great interest in breed specific illness. I'm hoping in the futur there will be chances for more specialized vet tech oportunities.

I am super excited but manage to contain it durring the day. I do every now and again wake up in the middle of the night amazed that this is really happening.

She is wonderful, I wouldn't trade my mom for the world even with her sometimes annoying little quirks. The funny thing is she used to be afraid of dogs, so for a very long time I was convinced I would have to wait much longer to obtain a dog. I managed to show her that dogs can be wonderful companions. It took me a good two years hahah, I'm so proud of her though. She really likes dogs now, although I know she is a cat person at heart. She has a friend who has two little dogs and is always excited to tell me how the walk went.

Oh, wow, that Black Doberman Emma has is just....gorgeous  She looks a lot like Teddys dad.

I finally figured it out xD I'm so happy...and tired I really should go to bed earlier than 3 in the morning.

Image

That's my baby Teddy. I'm pretty sure the Dobie butt in the corner is Roman his daddy. As you can see he has HUGE paws. He was sleepy in this picture and wasps were trying to eat everyone. Shortly after he fell asleep in my arms and it was true love.

Awesome, you all understand the fun of Canadian weather  I kid, I love our weather it keeps nasty bugs away and makes cuddling with pets oh so wonderful.

Anywho, I'm going to take a wee break from the Daily Puppy and take some long naps, should be back in a day or two.

I saw Teddy's new profile, and commented there. What a gorgeous, gorgeous fellow!!! I also love this latest photo you've posted. What a pretty girl you are, and you do look so very happy! :D

There are specialized Vet Tech positions although I'm sure one has to be at the top of their field to obtain one. I know there is only ONE full-time Neurology Vet Tech at the OVC in Guelph. I've spoken to her many many times. She is amazing, although we've never actually met when I've been there for my visits. She runs everything "behind the scenes". Obviously that is in Ontario, but it's an amazing place! Isn't there a Veterinary College at one of the Universities in Alberta? I think there is one either in Alberta or Saskatchewan. I'm afraid with this vast country of ours, I'm not up on my Veterinary Colleges. These Colleges are always under the purview of a University obviously.

You have some very exciting times ahead. The wait for Teddy must seem incredibly long now that he has been born, and you've met him and cuddled him. I think waiting for Oliver was harder than being pregnant. It was the longest 2 months of my life. :P (I waited a very long time to have a Cavalier.)

I'm glad you and Emma have "met". 8)

Hey guys, sorry I haven't been on for a while. I've been doing some extra work to earn a bit of extra cash to go into my "doggy wagon" fund. I know it's an expensive sport, but one day I would love to have a dog that will pull a little wagon around. I think a doberman would be a wonderful cart puller.

Oh Deb, you took the words right out of my mouth, Teddy is a gorgeous, gorgeous fellow ^_^ he will be so handsome when he grows up. I'm glad you all like him, not that if you didn't it would change my opinion of him, still. I was pretty happy, it doesn't get much better than hanging out with doberman puppies in the quiet country.

It's nearly the end of september, I'm kind of nervous acctualy. I'm not sure what the expect except the unexpected. I can't wait for all the snuggles and teaching my puppy to sit for the first time. I can't wait, sort of, I still have some preparing to do and need to do a big clean up all around the house. As much as I want this puppy in my life, I want to be ready too.

Here in Alberta there isn't much for vet tech in specializing unless you decide to work with some of the larger animals(cows, horses, pigs, etc.). Alberta does a lot of work with them, mostly due to us being well known for our Beef. We do have a specific vet school in Calgary somewhere. I don't really know all the details, I'll be taking my education at NAIT where it's close by and very familiar to me. I really like the teachers there too :]

Tracy the Scottish Deer Hound is a lovely and enormous breed. I adore large breeds and I really like England too, the people are so friendly and have a great sense of humor.
Libby Lou is a really cute name by the way.

I have a question about the Cavalier. Is it true that they are imaginary fly biters? Because, that just sounds so adorable xD

It's great to see who you are and the most adorable Teddy. Nerves are understandable, it's normal. Enjoy holding Teddy while you can, before too long you won't be able to do that. Glad you met Emma, she knows much about the breed.

Good luck with school! Back in the ages......there wasn't a vet tech school, I did take Animal Science and Behavior in College, then my learning was on the job training which worked well.

I've never heard that Cavaliers are imaginary fly biters! If they have SM/CM, they are known to "air scratch". I know that one of our Cavaliers on here, Kiba, loves to catch real flies! I learn something new every day. Perhaps someone else has heard of this.

I'm sure you are very excited. Anticipation is half the enjoyment. :D

Once Teddy is home, and has been with you for a few hours, I'm quite sure you won't be nervous, or as nervous as you are now. It's a combination of excitement, anticipation and the unknown. Enjoy it all.

I'm naturally a bit nervous and very excited. It really is like counting down to christmas

Thanks Kian, I'm going to work hard. I bet all that hands on learning did wonders. I personally learn well from doing, not sitting and reading a text book.

That's what I need, a dog to catch flies for me. I would love that. It's absolutely adorable watching animals hunt bugs and pieces of fluff imaginary or not

Sorry about the double post but I thought while the baby is having a nap I'd give you guys a quick up date.

Teddy has been home for 3 days now. He is absolutely wonderful. The house training is going much better than I thought it would, he seems to know exactly what to do when I take him outside. He has only had a few accidents(which were totaly my fault, I'm still learning his signals and he is a fantastic puppy).

Poor baby doesn't do so well in the car, he was drooling like crazy and vomited once. I was concerned he might dehydrate since he didn't want to drink anything. He was okay though, and amazingly he didn't need to use the toilet throughout the very long 3 hour trip. He held it until we got home and to my surprised peed outside like a good puppy. I was so proud of him.

He whines a bit at night but we ignore him and he understands quickly that its time to sleep and then he is good the whole night.

He took to his crate right away, he loves sleeping in it and bringing his toys into it

anywho he is awake now I have to take him outside. It might be a bit before my next post since I am spending a lot of time with him.
